The movie "Hidden Figures" is an absolute masterpiece. A necessary story to tell when we are bombarded with images of African-American women that do not tell the full story of our grace, beauty, resilience and most of all our brilliance. This story is compelling and pulls at the heart strings of the most hardened individuals. It is appalling that the contributions of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson were hidden and only now is being told, but I'm glad that I am living in an era where I can tell this story for years to come. It's not hidden any more! Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae did a phenomenal job bringing these hidden figures to life. I am so very proud of them! This story certainly raises the question that's on everyone's mind; exactly how many hidden figures are there, who are they and why are their contributions hidden? Racism, bigotry and sexism clearly were the leading reasons why the stories of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson were hidden....but what are the reason now that hidden figures are not getting the credit they deserve for their contributions and accomplishments in the workplace? I have witnessed on many occasions individuals who have not received the recognition that they are rightly due for their achievements in the workplace (and the outcome of this kind of treatment can lead to resentment and hostility). Instead, their accomplishments were stolen and passed off as if they were someone else's. It happens all of the time and it may even be happening to you. What will you do to ensure that you are not a hidden figure?
